Heater Won't Light or Turn On

A failed igniter or flame sensor, a faulty gas valve or control board, a thermostat problem or a tripped breaker can stop a garage heater from starting. We test each part and replace what has failed.

Short Cycling or Shutting Off

A heater that starts and stops every few minutes often has a dirty flame sensor, a blocked vent, a failing pressure switch or an overheating limit switch. We find the cause and fix it so the heater runs full cycles again.

Cold Air, Noises or Odd Smells

Cold air from the fan, rattling, a squealing fan motor or a burning smell point to burner, fan motor or venting problems. If you smell gas, leave the garage and call ATCO Gas at 1-800-511-3447 or 911.

Repair or Replace Your Garage Heater?

Honest Advice Before Any Work

Most garage heater problems can be fixed with a part replacement or a cleaning. We diagnose the heater first and tell you the price before we start any repair.

When replacement can make more sense: the heater is older and needs repeated repairs, the heat exchanger is cracked or rusted through, replacement parts are no longer available, or the heater is too small to keep your garage warm.

If a new heater is the better choice, we will explain why and give you a written quote. New garage heaters are installed from $2,975 + GST. Learn more about garage heater installation.

First check that the thermostat is set to heat and above the garage temperature, the breaker and service switch are on, and the gas valve is open. If it still won't start, the igniter, flame sensor, gas valve or control board may have failed. Book a repair and we'll find the cause.

Short cycling is usually caused by a dirty flame sensor, a blocked vent or air intake, a failing pressure switch or the heater overheating. Turning it off and on may get it running again, but the cause should be checked before the heater fails completely.

A heater that runs the fan without heating usually has an ignition or burner problem, a closed gas valve, or a safety control that is shutting the burner off. We test the ignition, burner and safety controls to find the problem.

Book a yearly tune-up before winter. Cleaning the burner and flame sensor and checking the venting, igniter and gas pressure catches most problems before they leave you with a cold garage. See garage heater maintenance.

It depends on the problem and the part needed. We diagnose the heater first and tell you the price before we start any repair, so there are no surprises.

Yes. We repair Reznor, Modine, Beacon Morris, Lennox and most other gas-fired garage unit heaters.

If the heater is older and needs repeated repairs, has a cracked heat exchanger, or is too small for your garage, replacement can be the better value. We give you an honest recommendation either way. See garage heater installation.

Leave the garage and your home right away. Don't use light switches or other electrical devices, and call ATCO Gas at 1-800-511-3447 or 911 from outside. Once the gas is shut off and it's safe, we can repair the heater.
